I decided to look up information about the crane (bird) online. Because I'm toying with the idea of setting the story in the celtic lands rather than in Japan, I wanted to find out if the crane would still be a realistic bird to use or whather I would have to change species for one more geographically suitable. Whenever I searched for images of cranes, many different plumages and sizes of birds came up, so research helped me to define each type of crane, to better understand them.
While most of the birds seem to live in Siberia and Eastern Asia, there is one kind in particular, the common crane, which is also native to Europe and North America (as shown above).
Wikipedia mentions that the crane is popular both in Japanese and Irish mythology, which I think is really cool. Though technically extinct in Ireland for the last two centuries, I think I could realistically place a crane in a non-contemporary undefined european setting and have it work well.
I ahve to decide what I want to be the cause of the crane's injury at the start of the story. Should I have a hunter hurt her with an arrow? Or will an animal attack her? I didn't know if the crane actually had any natural predators, but I managed to find out online that while they are hunted by humans for sport, they are also prey to wolves, foxes and bears, which widens my options.
